Surgery of the nose (Rhinoplasty) is very popular in men and women of all ages. This procedure is performed to correct the shape of the nose. External nasal deformities can cause great emotional distress is just the answer. Nose is the most prominent feature in the face and an ugly deformed nose can be an extremely troublesome and worrying factor for anyone. To get the nose in a good shape is very important in regards to facial aesthetics and beauty. The reshaping of the nose cannot be standardized; it has to be customized as per one’s face structure; whether long, round, square or oval.
In the rhinoplasty procedure, the cuts are taken in a hidden manner as a result there are no visible scars.
There are various areas of the nose that can be changed – such as the nostrils, the tip of the nose or the bony structure. Rhinoplasty can recontour the nasal profile, change the angle between the nose and upper lip and reshape the nasal tip.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR NOSE SURGERY?
Some of the indications that you may be a good candidate for nose surgery are:
1. Your nose appears too large for your face.
2. There is a bump on the nasal bridge when viewed in profile.
3. Your nose seems too wide when viewed from the front.
4. The nasal tip droops or plunges.
5. The tip is thickened or enlarged.
6. Your nostrils are excessively flared.
7. Your nose is off-centre or crooked.
8. Previous injury has made your nose asymmetrical.
Nose reshaping surgery should only be performed when the nose is fully grown, usually at the age of fifteen.
HOW RHINOPLASTY IS PERFORMED?
Dr. Viral Desai can perform various types of alterations to your nose – changes can be made to the septal bone if it is crooked. This is performed by re-breaking the nasal bone and straightening it, allowing the patient to breathe easier. Some patients have a hump on the bridge of their nose, which can be chiseled down, making it less visible. The nasal cartilage can be altered to allow a thinner bridge and narrower appearance. If the nose is bent it can be straightened and changes can also be made to lift a drooping tip. Implants or cartilage can also be inserted to build up areas to produce a better looking nasal structure.You will be given a general or local anaesthetic and sedation (depending on your type of surgery). It is important to inform Dr. Viral Desai prior to surgery of any previous complications/reactions to anaesthetics or of any anxiety or nervous conditions
You will have a nasal pack inserted into your nose, which is removed 24 hours after your procedure. You may also have a splint applied to the nasal bridge or sutures, which are removed 7 days post-surgery.
Wear comfortable clothing (i.e. a tracksuit or a top that is buttoned or zipped at the front rather than a top that you have to pull over your head) on the day of your surgery.
You should discuss the alterations you would like to see made with Dr. Viral Desai. Oftentimes, surgery of the chin is performed with nasal surgery to improve appearances. During the consultation at our Mumbai & Pune centres, there are several points that Dr. Viral Desai will consider regarding your nose reshaping surgery, such as:
1. Your nasal bone structure and its shape and size
2. Any previous nasal injuries
3. Breathing, allergies or sinus problems
4. Previous nasal operations
5. Any serious illnesses or operations or medications that you are presently taking.
You should inform Dr. Viral Desai if you are taking any nasal sprays. You should expect to be with Dr. Viral Desai for at least 30 minutes.

You should stop smoking (including the use of nicotine patches), intake of any blood thinning tablets (i.e. aspirin/disprin) and intake of vitamins at least 1 week prior to surgery.
Fasting is required for 7 hours prior to surgery.
Medicines prescribed by Dr. Viral Desai should be taken as advised.
You need to wear loose comfortable clothing – with a top that is either buttoned or zipped at the front – not one that is pulled over the head.
Bending, lifting and straining should be avoided for the first few days post operatively.
You should be able to return to work within 7-14 days.
Exercise should also be avoided for at least two weeks after surgery.
Care must be taken to avoid trauma to your nose for atleast one month.
It is important not to wear glasses for a number of week’s post operatively, as this can affect the healing process, by causing indentation. You should consult Dr. Viral Desai if this affects you.
It is important to sleep on your back with your head raised to minimize possible complications. Rest is an essential part of the recovery process. The recovery period varies from patient to patient and it is important not to expect too much too soon.
It is essential that you have someone to take you to and from the day facility. It is also imperative that someone stays with you for a 24-hour period after the procedure.
The ears will have sutures, which will be removed after 2 weeks.
A bandage will need to stay in place around the head for 7-10 days and you will need to buy a tennis headband to wear around your head when you arrive home.
